How did you start your journey as a pet product entrepreneur?


Krystal: It was something I’d thought of for such a long time. I’ve always been obsessed with animals, and then when I became a fur parent, I wanted to give my fur kids their best shot at living a long, healthy and happy life. So, the more I educated myself, read labels and researched ingredients, I thought.. ‘this is what I should be doing. I’ll create a beautiful, all-natural pet brand that pet parents can trust and can buy with confidence, knowing a fur mum has researched and created a range that is truly good for their fur kids.’

Could you share some insights into the process of developing and formulating your natural pet products?


Krystal: Finding passionate and like-minded experts has been my secret weapon. I was lucky enough to have found myself some amazing animal naturopaths, a herbalist and nutritionists who have worked with me to create natural, effective products. We work in a very collaborative way because I always have and always will want to be involved and overlook what goes into our products.

How do you ensure the safety and effectiveness of your natural pet products?


Krystal: I take the safety of our animals extremely serious, and I am unapologetically ruthless when it comes to who we work with and the quality of our products. I only work with carefully selected and certified manufacturers in Australia. Our products are created by Australian experts in animal nutrition, naturopathy and herbs. I personally have so much to do with product research and development and if I am unsure or not completely confident in an ingredient, it will not be used in our products. We also quality check every batch. We do numerous rounds of testing and modifying before releasing any new product. Anything other than the treats is tested on humans (including myself) before they are used on pets. There have been products we haven’t been released because the testing didn’t do well… but we keep going, until it is.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and research in the natural pet product industry?


Krystal: I don’t do a lot of this myself, but attending expos and tradeshows is a great way to see up and coming products. Also keeping an eye on the US and UK market is a great one as they tend to have the trends come through first. I personally use a lot of Facebook groups where pet parents are asking for natural solutions for their pets’ health issues. I get a lot of inspiration from pet owners and I try to fill those gaps to help with their needs.

Can you share some tips for other aspiring pet business owners interested in venturing into the natural products market?

Krystal: Make sure you have a point of difference or something unique to offer to be able to stand out amongst the thousands of other pet businesses. And be patient… Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is creating a successful pet business. But stick with it, learn as much as you can along the way, and step outside your comfort zone, because that’s when great things will happen.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of running a pet business centred around natural products?


Krystal: I love that we are helping pet parents make better choices for their fur kids. We have built a beautiful community, and we are all motivated by the health of our pets. It’s rewarding and so much fun.

Have you faced any challenges in sourcing natural ingredients for your products, and how did you overcome them?


Krystal: I think I was lucky enough to have come from an operations and procurement background, so I’ve got a bit of experience with inventory control, I haven’t had too many problems with sourcing ingredients just yet luckily. But one main bit of advice, is to make sure you have multiple options and suppliers. Another thing is to speak with your suppliers about the ingredients and if they are seasonal etc. then you can plan around that.
