How Pet Botanica Built a Natural Pet Brand Australians Trust: Founder Interview
Pet Botanica founder Krystal turned years of reading labels for her own fur kids into an all natural Australian pet brand. In this interview, she shares how her products are formulated and tested, the community that inspires her, and honest advice for anyone starting a pet business.

Every pet owner has stood in a pet aisle, turned a product over and tried to make sense of the ingredients list. Krystal did that too, again and again, until she realised she wanted to create the products she couldn’t find.
The result is Pet Botanica, an all natural Australian pet brand built on one simple promise: products a pet parent can buy with confidence, because a fellow fur mum has done the research first.
I chatted with Krystal to talk about how Pet Botanica began, what really goes into making natural pet products, and the lessons she’d share with anyone dreaming of starting their own pet business.
Pet Botanica at a glance
- Founder: Krystal, a lifelong animal lover and fur mum

- Made in: Australia, by carefully selected certified manufacturers
- Developed with: Animal naturopaths, a herbalist and nutritionists
- Quality promise: Every batch is quality checked, and products go through several rounds of testing before release
How did Pet Botanica begin?
Krystal: It was something I’d thought about for such a long time. I’ve always been obsessed with animals, and when I became a fur parent, I wanted to give my fur kids their best shot at a long, healthy and happy life. The more I educated myself, read labels and researched ingredients, the more I thought, “This is what I should be doing.” I wanted to create a beautiful, all natural pet brand that pet parents can trust and buy with confidence, knowing a fur mum has researched and created a range that is truly good for their fur kids.
How are Pet Botanica’s natural products developed?
Krystal: Finding passionate, like minded experts has been my secret weapon. I was lucky enough to find some amazing animal naturopaths, a herbalist and nutritionists who have worked with me to create natural, effective products. We work in a very collaborative way, because I always have and always will want to be involved and oversee what goes into our products.
How does Pet Botanica make sure its products are safe?
Krystal: I take the safety of our animals extremely seriously, and I’m unapologetically ruthless about who we work with and the quality of our products. I only work with carefully selected, certified manufacturers in Australia. Our products are created by Australian experts in animal nutrition, naturopathy and herbs.
I’m personally very involved in product research and development, and if I’m unsure or not completely confident in an ingredient, it won’t be used. We quality check every batch, and we do numerous rounds of testing and modifying before releasing any new product. Everything other than the treats is tested on humans, including myself, before it’s used on pets. There have been products we haven’t released because the testing didn’t go well, but we keep going until it’s right.

Where does Krystal find inspiration for new products?
Krystal: Expos and trade shows are a great way to see up and coming products, and keeping an eye on the US and UK markets helps, because trends tend to come through there first. But I personally get the most from Facebook groups, where pet parents are asking for natural solutions to their pets’ health issues. I get a lot of inspiration from pet owners, and I try to fill those gaps to help with their needs.
What advice does Krystal have for new pet business owners?
Krystal: Make sure you have a point of difference, something unique that helps you stand out among the thousands of other pet businesses. And be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a successful pet business. Stick with it, learn as much as you can along the way and step outside your comfort zone, because that’s when great things happen.
How do you avoid ingredient supply problems?
Krystal: I was lucky to come from an operations and procurement background, so I have some experience with inventory control, and I haven’t had too many problems sourcing ingredients yet. My main advice is to make sure you have multiple options and suppliers. Talk to your suppliers about the ingredients, including whether they’re seasonal, so you can plan around that.
What’s the most rewarding part of running Pet Botanica?
Krystal: I love that we’re helping pet parents make better choices for their fur kids. We’ve built a beautiful community, and we’re all motivated by the health of our pets. It’s rewarding and so much fun.
Key lessons from Krystal’s journey
Whether you’re a pet parent choosing products or a business owner building a brand, here’s what stood out from our chat.
- Start with a real problem. Pet Botanica began because Krystal couldn’t find products she fully trusted for her own pets.
- Surround yourself with experts. Working with naturopaths, a herbalist and nutritionists gave the brand credibility from day one.
- Never compromise on safety. If an ingredient isn’t right, it doesn’t go in, and if a product doesn’t pass testing, it doesn’t launch.
- Listen to your community. Pet owners’ questions in online groups are one of Krystal’s best sources of product ideas.
- Find your point of difference. In a crowded market, being clearly different is what helps you stand out.
- Plan your supply chain early. Multiple suppliers and an understanding of seasonal ingredients prevent problems later.
- Be patient. Building a trusted brand takes time, persistence and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
What should pet parents look for in natural pet products?
Krystal’s approach offers a useful checklist for anyone shopping for their pets:
- Read the label. Look for ingredients you recognise and a clear list of what’s inside.
- Ask who formulated it. Products developed with animal health experts are a good sign.
- Check where it’s made. Knowing the manufacturer and country of origin adds confidence.
- Look for quality checks. Brands that test and check their batches take safety seriously.
- Talk to your vet. If your pet has a health condition or takes medication, check with your vet before trying a new product, natural or not.
